MALASHA

EMPRESS MALASHA – SHE'S ROYAL

Kerry-Ann Bercher, Gleaner Online/Daflex Writer

‘Malasha' meaning ‘African Queen', was the name given at birth to the young, gifted and black, songstress, Melissa Thomas.

She was delivered at home and grew up in Rose Hall, Linstead. At age 17, she moved to Barbican along with her sister and three brothers.

Malasha, which is also her stage name, has been singing from her earlier days as a part of the choir at the Linstead Baptist Church .

She is a past student of the Charlie Mount High School . Her interest in music was realized when she made it a habit of making music using the class furniture; rapping and singing to the beat with friends.

She has now embraced her talent as a rapper and singer and takes her inspiration from international superstars like Missy Elliot, Eve, Timbaland and Dr Dre. She also enjoys and has had the privilege of working with Jamaican entertainers such as Lutan Fyah Sizzla Kalonji, Junior Reid and Wayne Fire. She has also done work with Mphatic Records' Steven Ventura and has recorded songs such as ‘Give It To Me' on the Energy Riddim back in 2004. Malasha has also written a host of songs, her first being ‘Say You Wanna Buss Around With Me' and ‘Man To Man Is So Unjust'.

In her musical journey, she has been given the opportunity to perform at a number of shows all over Jamaica such as Irie Vibrations in 2002, Linstead Fire in 2005 and Spring Break 2008.

Currently, Malasha is working towards making her name as an established entertainer and plans to release songs such as ‘Wine Up Yuh Body', ‘Blue Sun', ‘You're Loving Me', ‘I Got The…' and ‘Burn The Pagans'.

‘With my music, I plan to educate and make a positive change. I want my music to be an inspiration, especially to women.”

Know as much as you can about the music industry and stay dedicated and determined is the advice she gives to young musical entrepreneurs.

Her name says it all...she's royal. Melissa Thompson is Empress Malasha…aiming for greatness.
